Women In Hockey

Living in Florida, women's hockey is really not popular. I love the game and deciding to become a goalie for ice hockey seemed even more unlikely for a Florida girl. When I first started playing there weren't any girl teams in my state. The ice hockey community is small, we all know each other! When I began I was one of two girl goalies. The only other one was a few years older than me. I played with the boys from age six until age thirteen. Each team I would eagerly await to see the roster hoping that another girl was on the team. I believe the most I ever had was two other girls on my team at one time. Finally at age thirteen Florida started a girls travel team under the boys tier 1 association known as the Florida Alliance. It was a rough start. By the next season I knew I had to move on if I wanted to play higher level hockey. The boys were always welcoming and I got better playing with them, but I wanted to be on an all girl team. I started to play tier 1 for the St. Louis Lady Blues. It was a much better caliber of players and it helped me improve dramatically. Hockey is starting to really grow in my home state and I am excited to see where it will go! This article push a lot of buttons for me. I love the sport and I know women have a place in it. I enjoyed reading this forward thinking article.
